Audio Cutting out

Postby hp1975 » 15 Jan 2016, 07:45

RPi2 with IQAudio DAC + connected on WiFi with RPi2 official dongle.

Listening last night and the audio was cutting out, not skipping, but actually stopping for seconds at a time, sometimes a minute. I thought the unit was disconnecting but checking my router I could still see it was connected. However, when the audio stopped I also noticed that I was unable to connect to the UI.

POwer cycling the unit did not solve the problem. Grateful for any advice on what may be causing this.

Hi, just bumping this with an update. Ive noticed that the WiFi strength according to the UI is 39%, this seems quite low especially considering the unit os only a few metres from my router. Is it likely that this low WiFi strength is the cause of the dropouts?

Hi hp1975,

from your other post i read, that you mostly listen to webradio.
Does this also happen when playing music from a NAS?

It does, at first I had the same thought that it was the streams (even though they work fine on my Raspian internet radio) but last night I used the NAS as a source and it just cuts for a second or two, comes back briefly and then cuts altogether. The pi in the kitchen has the same dongle and is further from the router but has twice the signal strength. I'm going to swap the dongle over to see if there is a difference and then I guess i'll have resort to running a massive long Ethernet cable to eliminate whether its the WiFi or not. Problem is that its an intermittent problem so it can be fine one day and rubbish the next, :(

Another update/question.

Ive notcied that the audio seems to only cut when i am listening via my wireless headphones upstairs. The transmittter for the headphones is connected to the 3.5mm audio out on my IQAudio DAC+. When the audio cuts i think it is coinciding with the flaky wifi signal i have upstairs and therfore i thought it might be possible that if the client is flaking in and out on the client device (android phone in this case) then it may then trigger the device to cut in and out as well. Now, I'm reasonably IT savvy and logic says that once the client has told the device to 'play' then it should do just that, 'play' until told otherwise regardless of whether the client is connected or not; therefore I'm a bit sceptical about my theory but i thought i'd run it by some real experts.
