Backup of the whole partition?

Howdy,

whats the best way under linux to create a img file of the sd card? Since i run a lot of modifications and test stuff like the alsaequal i would like to make a backup of the whole system, so i dont have to start all over again when something goes wrong.
It would be handy if i have a img file that i can flash to the card.
