Can' get wifi to work with Pi3

Postby Pscotttt » 22 May 2016, 21:47

I follow the instructions to first use an ethernet connection and then set-up a wifi connection and get the green checkmark next to the wifi SSID. I am using an iphone 5s for the UI interface. I shut down the Pi3 using the iphone and then disconnect the ethernet and then start the Pi3 up again. But I can't bring the UI on the iphone up. It can't find the Pi3. I just get the arrows going around in circles. I have to plug the ethernet cable back in to get the UI to come up. I have tried this both with DHCP and static IP address options. Neither works. I see that one time the Safari browser stores the Runeaudio address with address: runeaudio/network/wlan ... (my SSID). But that address seems to result in failure, too. What am I doing wrong? I want my Pi3 to work without an ethernet connection.

Hi,

you use "http://runeaudio.local" to connect to your Pi, right?

After rebooting your IPhone doesn't know that the ip address (Pi) has changed, so it can not reach RuneAudio.
Please use the new ip address for the first connection after the reboot.
http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (http://192.168.0.100)
runeaudio.local should work again after a few minutes (avahi will update the address).

Hi

I immagine that Pscotttt would like to use the internal wi-fi like AP without link it to a wi-fi router.
I was checking the same, but I think that it is not possible for now.

Anyway, if it will possible to use just the internal wi-fi like AP in the future, I imagine that we will not be able to use airplay and internet by wi-fi. Is it right?

Maybe better to use a static IP address for the Wifi, so that when you reboot the Pi it does not get a new IP address every time.... making it hard to be found on the network.

I tried the original direction by Frank.

1. Boot Pi3 with ethernet connection.
2. Connect to Runeaudio via iPhone using http://runeaudio.local
2. Find and connect to wireless connection (SSID) - tried both DHCP and static IP options
3. Saved wireless network profile; verified connection via green check mark
4. Powered off Pi3
5. Pulled out ethernet plug
6. Restarted Pi3
7a. Tried to connect to Runeaudio via http://runeaudio.local - failed
7b. Tried to connect to Runeaudio via http://(ip address from static IP option) - failed

One thing I noticed is that on the iphone the UI seems to constantly refresh the local connections available after a few seconds. I will connect to my wireless SSID, and the green check mark will show for a while. Then it refreshes automatically and the green check mark disappears. Also, there is a red X to the network in the profile on the wireless connection. And even if I use the static connection, the status will say no IP address was stored.
