Ok, I got it all. Most of this was my poor understanding of the components used in runeaudio.
1) upmpdcli works and I can send music to it
2) Runeaudio cannot yet 'see' upnp servers. I hope this makes it in the future releases
3) my hifiberry DAC does not have hardware volume control
My home brewed 5122 based card will, though.
