DLNA not working

Postby RobCN » 31 Oct 2016, 20:44

I'm new to Runeaudio. Have Runeaudio 0.3 running on a Raspberry Pi 1 with HiFiBerry DAC. The player is working and I can play songs from a USB flash drive. Controlling with the Android app. What I want to do is play songs via DLNA. I have a DLNA server on the network, and can play songs from that on my Roku player, so I think the DLNA is working properly.

So far I cannot get Runeaudio to "find" the DLNA server. I have toggled ON the UPnP/DLNA option in Settings, and typed in what I think is the UPnP / DLNA name, based the name I see on the Roku player. With this setup, I cannot see any indication of the DLNA songs on the Library screen, or anywhere else.

What am I missing?
Is Runeaudio supposed to detect the DLNA server? Other software seems to do this.
Where in Runeaudio should I look to see if the DLNA songs are there?

Rune DLNA option "on" state publishes Rune as a UPNP/DLNA renderer, which means you should find her not vice versa (this is life  ). In other words, using a source machine connected to the same network as Rune, you are able to stream audio to Rune, but the control is at the streamer, not at Rune.

Not what I expected. Seems backwards for a music player device. I guess this will not work for me, as I do not have a "source machine" to send audio to Rune. This doesn't make sense to me. If Rune has the library to allow song selection (in my case from the Android app) it does me no good to have to go to some other interface to play a song.

How would a source machine work to play songs? The DLNA servers that I have seen don't have a function like that?

Hi RobCN,

Rune Audio is manly designed to play music from your local or network storage.

"dror" gave you the magic search word!

Share your music within your network and connect Rune to this share.

Sorry, very late to this...

Just a practical example to support Dror and Frank's comments:

I'm able to render DLNA playback from my NAS music library on my RuneAudio device. In my case the NAS is a Synology DS212 (a few years old now, but the same NAS OS version as their newer models), and I'm using the Audio Station app on the NAS to select tracks and play them. Audio Station is DLNA-aware, so all you need to do is select the DLNA-enabled RuneAudio device as the playback target instead of (for example) "My Computer".

The only strangeness I've found at the RuneAudio end is in the "Playback source" dialogue that's available from the Playback screen. Even if DLNA rendering is activated, the "DLNA" button in the dialogue remains greyed-out and can't be selected - the only valid selection seems to be MPD (or Spotify if you use it). DLNA rendering still seems to work OK, though. This applies both with the standard RuneUI and with rern's RuneUI Enhancements.

Hope this helps,

Peace and friendship,
