Failure to boot, kernel not found, what am I missing?(solved

Postby truckinon » 10 Jan 2016, 23:02

Total noob at this, trying to get rune audio running on my Pi B.

I downloaded "RuneAudio_rpi2_0.3-beta_20150304_2GB.img" as a .GZ, used 7-zip to un-zip it, Formatted the card using SDformatter. Used Win32Diskimager (also tried USBimage tool), to load the image to the SD card. All looks like it went OK.

When I put the card in the Pi, I get the 7-flashes, which according to the trouble-shooting web sites means “7 flashes: kernel.img not found”.

The kernel file on the SD is kernel7.img. Just to try, when I rename it to kernel.img, the behavior changes, and I don’t get the 7 flashes, but nothing happens at all, one or two green blinks, then nothing. In either case, the splash screen with the colors comes up, same as before, but nothing progresses.

Hardware, all devices, all work OK with the standard OS just fine, so I know my system is OK.

What am I doing wrong? I've tried every variation I can think of, even added the config delay as suggested by one of the posts. No change no matter what I do.

Any help or direction much appreciated!!!

Hi truckinon,

what is the exact type you are using?
Pi1 Modell B or Pi 2 Model B?

I have a Pi 2 Model B. I did successfully install and bring up Volumio, as a test, so the process and hardware seem OK.

Hi truckinon,

extract the contents of the .gz file with a compressed file manipulation utility (e.g.: 7-Zip on Windows, Zipeg on Mac, Unzip on Linux).
You will now have an .img (raw disk image) file. Write this .img file to your SD card (Win32Diskimager).
There is no need to format the SD card.

Yep, exactly what I did. Multiple times.

After using the win32diskimager to write the .img to the SD card, I can look at the files on the card from windows and everything looks OK. There is a kernel7 file out there. However, the PI does not boot it. Just sits there and blinks 7-flashes.

I re-down-loaded the .gz file and unzipped it again, with the same results. Same process works OK to boot other images.

Any other ideas?

Hi truckinon,

that is really strange.

"kernel7.img" is the correct file name for a RP2, RP1 uses "kernel.img".

Did you already try a different SD card?
Or you can try image.

OK, tried the other download you posted, "RuneAudio_rpi2_0.3-beta_20151106_2GB". Extracted, loaded it to two different cards even, used a different USB card reader also, and still the same behavior. One green flash, followed by 7 green flashes, a pause, then 7 green flashes, etc...

I'm going to try a different image tool, but I don't think that is it. I even removed the DAC card from the PI, thinking that may have something to do with it, but no change.

Any other ideas?

I am totally out of ideas. Last thing I tried was to take the most current image and the writer and load the image on the SD card from a Windows XP box, instead of Win 7 64-bit. No difference.
