Hard drive library update

Hello all,
First off i am a total pi noob, i just bought a pi yesterday just for Rune, so bear with me please
Installation went fine and i am very happy with the results so far but i have just one issue and i hope there is some sort of easy fix for this.
So i noticed my external hd keeps running even if rune is inactive.
I didn't see a way to turn the hdd to sleep automatically, is there?
So i thought fine, no big deal, there is an on/off switch on the usb disk so i just turn the disk on when i need it.
But the problems that occurs then is that 1. the hd gets recognized again as a new disk while the old version prior to turning it down keeps listed in the Usb storage list, while being inactive.
2. The disk has to get scanned again which takes some time while i can't access most of the folders.
How do you solve this?

Hi Frank, thanks for the tip but i read that thread already but i didn't know what to do with that information being a noob.

pacman -Sy hdparm

This was the solution, but where and how do i enter this?
Could you direct me to the info i need to learn this?

Hi can you explain how i edit/generate the file "/etc/udev/rules.d/50-hdparm.rules"

And how do i know if sda is my device?

Hi all thanks for the help but i don't have any idea what i'm doing.

I appreciate all your efforts to explain how i should do this but i'm afraid the explanations generate more questions then answers

I guess i will store a part of my music library on a large thumb drive for the time being and hope there will be an update someday that will add this function in the settings menu for noobs like myself
