Tried your way of enabling hardware volume control, it works, but I can hear nothing under 30% and there is crackling over 80%

Crackling in my case might have been caused by increasing volume on my amplifier too much, as it was pretty high, to hear something below 50%

fluke43, I have RPi2 + IQAudio DAC+, Denon amplifier and Tannoy DC4T speakers.
