HDMI vs Hifiberry DIGI etc

Postby strangerng » 11 Dec 2014, 03:23

Hey guys!
Need your advice please
I'm using my Rpi with the 5.1 Pioneer receiver with DSD enabled via HDMI.
Have any of you compared Rpi's HDMI sound quality compared to some Hifiberry DIGI like audio cards?
Which sounds better?
Thanks

To compare you would need to extract the sound from the HDMI (it's some kind of I²S format, isn't it ?) and then convert it so that the same DAC can read both.
Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I beleive Hifiberry Digi takes the same I²S data from the Pi and just performs this conversion to Coax/Optical.

So essentially, it should be exactly the same. the only step that might be different is that in your case, the signal is not converted and feeds your DAC directly. So it should be marginally better to do that, I guess.

Does the alsa 48kHz kernel limit affect the DSD via HDMI?
I can't really understand the following: if we use the digital signal, why should it be resampled instead of being sent as it is to the receiver?
In my case it's an AV receiver which can work with 24/192.
