HEATSINKS ?

any of you added heat-sink on the PI3 ?
the two large chips top side of board ?
(the large chip om bottom side, dont get hot at all)
the CPU and DATA load, depends quite a lot what you do, try hi-def files, for a long time and see
the temperature get quite hot.

If you're not overclocking it than you should be fine. The rpi will auto-throttle the cpu if temps get too hot.

if i play music for a long time, my large heatsinks gets very hot,
i don not want the cpu to throttle down, so better keep it colder.

hi frank thanks for getting back on this.
i know how to access the console and execute simple commands
my units are all with no hdmi screen.
i did connect a watt usage meter, and see a clear result, the unit draw more watts in high definition modes
over standard cd resolution modes.
idle is 3 watt
max 5 watt
used a little usb stick for the sound samples, no harddisk.
i tried the temperature read command as suggested
echo GPU $(/opt/vc/bin/vcgencmd measure_temp)
my result is 42.9 in idle, after about 1 hr, board is with heatsinks and compleetly out on the open, not cased

now i enabled I2S and started some hidef audio,
after a few mins: 47.2

packed the board into a simple paper wrap, just to simulate a case where hot air cant move away so easy
after a few mins : 52.6

(i dont dare to do this, with no hearsinks on)

45-50 degrees for sustained periods is fine for CPUs. 60 or above is generally where you should be concerned.

Unscientifically, I can touch both my chips (the CPU and the smaller ethernet chip nearby) and both are just warm to the touch after many hours of music. I can't say the same about PC CPUs when used for long periods.

what is the over temperature trigger point ??

For comparison, I tried the temperature measurement after several hours of playing:

GPU temp=28.8'C

This is on a RPi3 running one of the recent nightly builds and Frost_dk's optimisations, including the upsampling to 24bit/192khz.

I got three PI3 running here, they all got exactly the same results as i explain..
and I got heatsinks on all of them.
"Discovery" what kind of super sized heatsink have you got ?
perform your test outside ? you live in Alaska ?
