Hi Pete,
You should first read this about adding the extra header to the Pi B board which provides the connectors required for a HAT dac:
https://www.raspberrypi-spy.co.uk/2012/ ... p5-header/It's getting quite difficult to get a HAT dac for the old Pi models. An easy and cheap option is a Chinese clone. On ebay you should be able to find one by searching 'DAC PCM5122' with
worldwide search switched on. Models are available for the B and B+ board formats so choose the right one, they cost around $12,= incl. shipping. You can also look at this thread:
p1fi-dac-i2s-random-audio-clicks-solved-read-t3534.html?hilit=pifi%20capacitor#p14034 You will read here about it's poor design and (if you can handle a soldering iron) how to improve it. If you read other posts on the forum regarding this DAC, some people are quite satisfied with the results without modifications.
The other route is to use a USB dac. Enormous choice, vast variations in quality.
