1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alsamixer

2. Via ssh

3. The variables you can change depend on the device, kernel modules and the driver. You set the required level for each variable by the 'slider', and can save your settings by 'alsactl store'

Google really is your friend...

Yes, I have no clue, but then I try to help myself. Also, better people than I have written answers to your questions...

alsamixer is installed with alsa, so is already present on your system. Depending on the DAC you use, you will see a selection of different features/variables, the effect of which you can change by altering their value. The changes are applied on the fly, but are not preserved if you don't use alsactl store.

ya ya ya :-) we are not "that" noobs, but close..

alsamixer started and tried, i could select the used sound card,
and live volume changed was responsive live, so far so good.
but dit not manage to figure out any min - max settings.

vent into
/var/lib/alsa/asound.state
and poked with almost all kinds of settings, nothing works, no response,
I see many mindb and maxdb figures
tried to poke it all, nothing affect the problem..

we are using the IQAudioDAC the one that support PCM5122 with hardware I2C controled volume..

BUT WHERE, dear experts : are the min and max settings to change ??
so when rune knob is a 0 it play ZERO
and when rune knob is at 100 it play max rated power, just BEFORE blowing up the martin logan speakers, he is kind of happy about them,
and yes he also got a very powerfull amp.. but no mecanical volume knob exist sorry..

>Btw: 0dB is audio standard.

YES correctly, but this also makes the usefull travel of rune knob, smaller,
so we added a load resistor on dac output, this way max is safe
and same usefull travel (about halve the rotation can be used)
