Well, I finally had a chat with the tech support guy at the Iomega distributor for North America. He was horrified that we were even trying this.
He says the MyDAC is only meant to work with Mac and Windows platforms, and that there is no approved Unix driver, let alone one for the RPi. He says the ARM chip is a real problem. He also said that in USB 1 mode, which is the only one where they would conceivably connect, the devices can't communicate asynchronously, so even if you got them working the quality would be lousy due to jitter. So, seems like it's just not the right device to drive this DAC.
His only suggestion was to try Debian as the OS, as it has a number of generic drivers that might be able to handle the DAC. Haven't tried that yet, but may give it a shot. However, given that my goal was a dedicated box to stream 96/24 high res files to the DAC and on into a pretty high end stereo system, the USB 1 issue is a show stopper.
For now I'm chalking it up to a fun try, and just running it through HDMI into my basic surround system for casual listening, Spotify, web radio, etc.
