Playback interruptions from NAS

Postby jan » 02 Sep 2015, 20:48

Hello,

First thank you so much for making RuneAudio. I love it a lot! :-)

Setup: I'm running version 0.3beta on a Raspberry2 and try to play ogg, mp3 and flac files over a wifi connection from my NAS WD MyBook Live (using NFS). The wfi connection seems to be OK, I can load the UI on both PC and Android phone and mounting the NAS works without problems. The library DB shows all songs.

Problem: Playing files works well at first but after a few songs there start to be drops and interruptions which become longer the longer I play music. Playing the same files from a USB stick or over a LAN cable works without this problem which is why I suspect it has to do with the wifi connection. I'm using an EDIMAX EW-7811UN wifi USB dongle.

I have already played around with the "Audio buffer size" and "Buffer before play" settings but without success. Does anyone have experience with such a setup? Is there perhaps other settings that I need to change? I would be super grateful if anyone could help me sort this out. I just love playing my music this way! I am familiar with accessing the Raspberry via SSH and know some Linux commands. Please let me know if you need any config files or output for assessing the problem.

Thank you so much in advance for your kind help.

Regards,
Jan

Hi Frank,

Thanks a lot for the quick reply! I have logged into the RaspPi with SSH, created the file "8192cu.conf" in /etc/modprobe.d as you suggested (it did not exist yet, is that normal?) and added the options line. Then I rebooted. Unfortunately that did not solve it. :-(

Interestingly, playing radio streams over the wifi dongle works without any problems. The interruptions only appear when playing files form the NAS.

Would you maybe have other ideas where to look? Otherwise, I will try to get another wifi dongle and try again next week...

Thank you so much again for your help!

I very occasionally suffer the same thing so I'm interested in this thread. I connect to my NAS via ethernet using a power plug adaptor but have a wireless dongle still in the Pi because it seems to make the boot take ages if I remove it.

FWIW, I use a 512 audio buffer size and have disabled 'buffer before play' - I didn't find it affected the problem and believe that buffering can cause issues, and experimentation showed that I didn't need to use it.

Thanks for your post, Discovery. Unfortunately, I haven't found a solution yet. I'm using a LAN cable at the moment until I have time to buy a second wifi dongle.

@Frank: Do you happen to know which dongle is known to work with RuneAudio without problems? I would then buy this specific one...

Thank you both!

I have been experimenting with a couple of WiFi dongles and they all work with varying degrees of effectiveness, but I don't have the model numbers off hand, so let me get back to you on that.

I can stream files via mounted network drives up to 24/196 with no issues, dsd64/128 can be a little spotty, which I attribute to WiFi strength/signal interference, etc. I've just ordered a 300mbps(8192 chipset) with a 5dbi antenna dongle and hopefully I can get better than the -53db signal. Have checked around and it seems wireless AC dongles by and large do not support Linux, so it's not something I've looked at yet.

After the 5dbi dongle, I will be looking at boosting signal from router end.
