possible bug in MP3 playback?

Postby 05suby » 06 Nov 2016, 02:22

Greetings-
I have gotten my RPI3+hifi digi working well in my car, however I do have one issue. When I play an MP3 from a USB thumb drive, it will only play for about 10 seconds, then the whole RPI locks up, have to remove power to restart. If I play the same MP3 file from the SD card, it works as it is supposed to. It's not a big deal at this point, I've got all my music on the SD card. Of note, FLAC plays fine from the same thumb drive.

I should have the latest version of rune- I did the update as part of setting up the hotspot to work in the car.

The rest of the equipment- optical to PPI DSP88r, Polk audio 5000.1 five channel amp, speakers and sub.

Thanks
Chuck

Could be a power issue.

See http://www.runeaudio.com/documentation/ ... eshooting/ how to increase USB Power.

How many Amperes can your power device deliver ? For RPi 3 2,5A min. is recommended.

I checked the power supply , it's a rocketfish branded supply rated at 3.1 amps at 5 volts, so that should be enough.
One thing that I noted is that the USB thumb drive, a 32 GB USB 3 sandisk, gets WAY too hot to the touch. It still played a FLAC file with no problems though. Given the already hot USB drive, I'm not sure that boosting the power to the drive is a good idea, although I'll check and see just how much the drive needs to work properly.

For now, I've got the music on the SD card and it works fine, so it's more of a curiosity than anything important.

edit to add this

a bit of digging around on the web reveals that this overheating may be a problem with the sandisk drives. I'll have to pick up a different brand of low profile drive to test this a bit more. I would like to stay with a low profile drive to keep the in-car install as compact as possible.
