I've been thinking some more about this. From the Rune UI I can happily mount any folder in any users' area on my iMac, which has IP address xx.x.x.111. I just have to use the SMB/CIFS (OS X Share) option as the file share protocol.
I cannot mount any folder on any other Mac in the house even though I do exactly the same thing, ensuring I use the appropriate username and password. I have tried connecting to xx.x.x.118, xx.x.x.127 and xx.x.x.135 with no luck. So, this makes no sense unless there is something different about my iMac.
What could be different and why aren't more Mac OS X users reporting problems?
A while ago (July) a user here "naircl" helped me out by guiding me to mount my music folder as a NFS share. The link to the thread is below. This involved doing stuff I don't understand, in Terminal, to the iMac as well as to Rune. Is it something I've done here that has made my iMac more accessible to Rune than it otherwise would be? I should note that the IP addresses of the iMac and the Pi are now not the same as they were at the time of the actions described in the thread. Hoping for help, thanks in advance.
