Rolling Repos & New Releases: Repo Snapshot

Postby daymz » 29 Jul 2015, 16:26

This request is not so much a coding request than an operational request.

The next time there is a release, let's make a full copy of the entire Arch LInux ARM repository on that day. Reason is pretty simple, with the Rolling Repo strategy used by ArchLinux, and the fact that a RuneAudio release can not (rightfully so for QA control) be upgraded to the latest components, we need to find a way to "freeze" the release's packages and be able to install kernel sources and headers (for example) a year after the RA release, and have the ability to compile and build new code, kernel modules, etc.

Real life example : I wanted to have the OverlayFS module to make the entire RuneAudio install base read-only and make a SD-crash - resistent setup.

Hi daymz,
you are absolutely right, I'm thinking about this kind of solution from a long time, we surely go in that direction because ArchLinux SuperFast repo rolling is driving us crazy. That said, taking care about a global repository is a time consuming task and we will surely need help to maintain it, so if there is someone who want to be the mantainer of that kind of repo we are, as usual, open to contribution.

We are also working on a different branch to provide a ReadOnly image by using aufs and SquashFS, we have a working version released for a commercial product that we have worked on in the last months, and now we are porting that experience here in RuneAudio.

Ciao.
Simone.
