rpi portable.

Postby spikey1973 » 05 Feb 2016, 22:41

just a question for the future.

i just made myself a box in which my pi, dac and ssd sit comfortably. in the future i would like to add an battery pack.
why... two reasons.

1) i can get completely of the power grind. improving sound quality (apparently), although i doubt the benefit will be small, but adding small differences usually get bigger together so. in the end i hope i will end up with a real good player.

2) reason.. to get it to portable stage.. but.. due to the headlessness of the system i would need my phone to controle it all. but how would i need to set up the system so i can use it directly to the phone. instead of via a router at home.

i kinda read some info on a way to install software to make your pi into a router with a usb wifi dongle. will that work?
and how easy would it be to switch than when back home in my normal network via router?

any thoughts on that will be highly appreciated.

Greats Matt

Assuming you have a smartphone and 3-4G, I think the easiest way is to turn on wifi hotspot on your phone and connect your Pi to it using a wifi usb dongle. I don't even know if it actually works though since I don't have a wifi dongle.

Using a smartphone as a hotspot works. This is exactly how I am using mine when away from home. My Samsung Galaxy phone is used as a hotspot for my laptop and for a Raspberry Pi2B with the Edimax WiFi dongle. Most of my music is on my laptop, some on a flash drive plugged into one of the Pi USB ports. The WiFi dongle is plugged into another USB.

I would not describe my setup as portable by todays standards though. Luggable, maybe ;)

Hi

Hostapd Will transforme pi in hotspot. Not out of the box, not with all wifi dongle. But it's working. Have a look on this site you have information.
This other way is your smartphone or an other pc un hotspot.

You have To test and chose what is the best for you.

super.. !

thank you, i actually never considered a phone as hot spot. ssems like a perfect solution. i will go and give it a try immediatly. oke it's not portable as of now but at least i have the next step aready fixed. all i need to do is a nice battery pack.

and indeed, i agree that luggable would be a beter description PeteB

........30min later.

well oke, that works near perfect.. i got the hotspot settings in rune.. connects perfectly.
bit "difficult" though to disconnect. when i say. connect now back to my local network instead of the hotspot, it doesn't do that... but when i turn the hotspot of.. without any problems. guess it's a signal strength issue. (phone was a lot closer than the rooter)

on the other hand.. when i wanted to connect via the 'volumio app on my phone to the pi, it didn't work via runeaudio.local/, i had to get my laptop connected to that network to. use ipscan to scan for ip number and connect that was. but because that is a automatic assigned ip adress i will need to look it up before i can use it. is ther another easier way. this works but still... could be easier.

on the other hand is there a better, not volumio related app i could use for this?

I'm not sure if I understand correctly what you are asking, so I'm just going to say this : the easiest way to control your RuneAudio player is to control it from a device that is connected to the same network as the Pi. This way you'll be able to use

i did.. and i can when using on my local network at home.

but when i connect the pi diectly to the hotspot which is my phone, i can't, i can only use the direct ip-adres (being 192.168.43.253), not http://runeaudio.local

but the 192.168.43.253 can change when i login.. so i would rather use runeaudio.local/

Oh okay yes, I understand now. It's because your phone isn't connected to the wifi hotspot it generates (obviously). There is no way to change that though. But you can turn off DHCP in Rune settings and make it a static IP address instead. You still won't be able to use but at least you won't have to worry about the IP address changing.

When away from home for an extended length of time, I use my smartphone as a hotspot, which sets up a small local WiFi net. I have had up to four devices connected to my phone this way, both using DHCP and using static IP.

At the moment I have one laptop/Linux, one RPi2B/DAC+, and one RPi2B/DIGI+ connected to the Samsung phone hotspot. The laptop uses its own WiFi and DHCP, each Pi uses the Edimax WiFi dongle and static IP. The phone is used both as a hotspot, and as remote control for Rune Audio.

In this configuration, Rune can play music from a flash drive (USB storage), from my laptop (Network mounts) or from the Internet (My Webradios).

The Pi running Rune Audio was assigned a static IP in the wlan0 file when I first flashed the SDHC card, and before I ever booted Rune for the first time. The wlan0 file is located in the /etc/netctl folder. full path: /etc/netctl/wlan0

My smartphone can ONLY be a WiFi hotspot OR a WiFi client (to another WiFi net) NOT both.

The hotspot works well even with poor cellular service, but NOT when there is no service at all. If there is no service from my carrier where I am staying, the phone can't get its "credentials", the hotspot does not start, so there is no WiFi and no RuneAudio.

At times when the phone is being used for something else, like browsing the Internet, watching a news video, downloading a large file etc, there can be a short drop (~1/2 second) in the music being played on the Pi. Other than that, it all works flawlessly. Not sure how, but it does work.

okay so i have setup runeaudio on my raspberry pi B+ using a tp link tl-wn822n and connect to my home network but what i want to do is using the wn822n i wanna setup a hotspot so i can connect my phone to it and control runeaudio thereby using runeaudio where ever i go, so i would not need a router ...

i have considered making a hotspot on my galaxy s6 edge but that would drain its battery very fast... i want something on the rpi side !! i am still a noob in linux so.....

Thank You...
