Rune and PiTFT Plus 3.5 Inch Display

Postby nick » 18 Oct 2016, 16:38

I just got a Raspberry Pi 3, Adafruit PiTFT Plus 3.5 inch screen and I have a HiFiBerry Amp+ on the way. I would like to setup Rune as a whole house audio solution and this package will fit in the 2 gang boxes that we have all over our house. While I wait on the Amp+ to arrive I am trying to get the screen to play nicely with Rune. I have been reading through this thread trying to get everything setup and I'm not having any luck: adafruit-pitft-2-8-capacitive-screen-with-buttons-solved-t3964.html

This is my first dive into Linux. I spent the morning fighting/learning how to use Vi! Assuming I have Rune setup and working on the Pi, does anyone have a step by step for getting the display to work? I will keep plugging away but if anyone has a nice step by step that would be great because if I can get this to work I'll be repeating it 6-7 more times and I'd hate to do it by trial and error every time.

Hi Frank - I did the update command, but after I restarted the booting process stopped at the RuneAudio login screen and there was a lightning bolt in the upper right corner of the screen. I read something saying this is referring to a brownout on the Raspberry Pi 3. I am going to rewrite the RuneAudio image on the SD card and start from scratch again and see if I get the same results. I am also going to try a different power source since I was using the USB port on my laptop (it was plugged in to the wall though). I have a feeling that may be my problem now, looking at the USB specs. I guess it makes sense since I don't remember seeing the bolt (or the rainbow icon which it seems to have replaced) before I plugged the screen in.

I feel as though I taken steps backwards. I tried a fresh image of Runeaudio on two different sd cards and I can't connect to the Pi. When Rune boots the Pi shows in the router list but it has a really odd looking MAC address:

When I attempt to go to that network address I get the following error: "This site can’t be reached 192.168.0.100 refused to connect." I've tried 4 different network cables, and several different ports on my router. Nothing seems to work. I even bought this power supply: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MARDJZ4/

If I boot using Raspbian I get a normal looking MAC address and I can use the Pi as expected.

This is incredibly frustrating. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Edit: I tried Volumio and that worked pretty well. I would rather use Rune though.

With a fresh download and only an ethernet cable, hdmi cable and usb mouse and keyboard connected I was able to get Rune to boot and get an IP. After that I did the following:
1. SSH in through Putty
2. pacman -Sy --force raspberrypi-firmware-bootloader linux-raspberrypi
3. rm /etc/modules-load.d/raspberrypi.conf
4. opened boot/config.txt and added:
dtparam=audio=on
dtoverlay=pitft35-resistive
5. Rebooted - No internet connectivity. It says Eth0 is connected, but it doesn't have an IP.
6. Turned the Pi off, plugged the TFT in and rebooted again. The TFT screen turned black but didn't have a picture and this time an IP was assigned, 192.168.0.101, but I can't SSH into it nor can I get to that by entering the ip into a web browser. I seem to be right back to where I started.

So, I turned the Pi off, swapped to my Raspbian sd card and it worked straight away, the screen didn't work though which I expected.

Hi Frank. Thanks for the suggestions. I've spent the entire day on this, and it just won't work. Once in a while Rune will boot and I can get to it via other computers in the network but most of the time I can't. It always shows the RuneUI on the HDMI moniter it is plugged into. It doesn't matter if I have the screen connected or not, Rune just will no reliably run. I don't know what else to try, I've downloaded the image multiple times, written the image to the sd card more times than I can count. It seems like a crap shoot every time I turn the thing on as to whether or not it work work. I never did get an image to show on the TFT either.

I really, really want this to work but my patience has run its course.

Hi Frank, I read about redirecting to the other framebuffer for TFT display and was going to address that at a later time. I was trying to say that the RuneOS and RuneUI seem to be working insomuch that it is booting and working it is just really odd that the network seems to be flaky at best.

I ordered another Raspberry Pi on the off chance I am fighting a hardware issue. That one will be here on Friday. In the meantime I am going to play around with this one in Raspbian in the hopes of getting more familiar with the hardware. Rune is just too cool to let go and walk away! I'll post back when I know more.
