many things mentioned here are false, I see this also happen in the german Archlinux forum. I will make it short.
Two services running on our routers are interessting for us:
1. DHCP = sends out networkconfiguration for clients, this means addresses
2. DNS = resolves the (client)names in the network
the networkconfiguration from dhcp contains the address of the dns-Server, in our case router's address.
The router must than send out the names. I do not rembember which protocol is used for that. But since the britains send us our routers nothing worked. In germany we have had Siemens and AVM (so called Fritz!Boxes) works perfect. Now they want us to pay more for our good hardware or take the trash, which can not resolve names. Germans say: hit the router till it works.
There is a solution, called static IP. There are examples in /etc/netctl/examples. Address reservation is not needed. This is a misunderstanding of DHCP, it only sends configuration. You can do this by hand, it is called static IP. And not totally correct, but helps to understand it, it is a class c net.
On linux client you could also give a address a name (/etc/hosts). I do not know anything about windows. I thing no one really knows.
Trust me I have a CCENT.
