Sending 16/44.1 files as 24 bit / software volume control

Postby DanStaps » 28 Dec 2015, 00:07

I've done some searches on this topic but couldn't come up with anything conclusive so thought I'd try a post instead.

I'm keen to take advantage of the convenience of software volume control but want to minimise the potential impact on sound quality. Is Runeaudio able to 'pad' a 16 bit file (in my case 16/44.1 CD rips to FLAC) out to 24 bit in order for volume reduction in software not to reduce effective dynamic range of the playback?

Would this even work or would the source file need to have been resampled to 24 bit at the point of ripping it?

Still on a bit of a learning curve with regards to the finer details of digital audio so please forgive me if this turns out to be a stupid question!

Hi Dan,

You could use a pipe out to sox or brutefir in order to up sample your redbook files. Basically Rune would hand over the data stream to a different programm and this programm would then pass it on to your DAC. For further information type Frank's Stereo pages into your browser.

Best Regards
