Most of the server solutions running Linux will do a good job, but they all take some administration, sometimes a lot of hours if you are not familiar with the particular flavor of Linux. Old computers use more power and make more noise than new ones. It got so I could hear mine running from inside a closet on quiet mornings.
I am planning on setting up another Pi with a hard drive, or maybe an Odroid C2 (because its network performance is better).
I also found that a Pi running Xbian/Kodi (which I have for videos) does a credible job as a UPnP media server for RuneAudio, smart TVs and my laptop. That way I may be able to use one system for video, and still have a media server running in the background. The UpNP server is an option in the system settings, and that's it. If Rikardo is reading this, maybe he will have some idea about how well Xbian would run with more than one person using it at a time.
My all-time favorite was Serviio running on a computer I kept for a while to run Windows 2000. At the time there was no supported Linux version of Serviio. Btw, Serviio is not completely free any more. Payment is sort-of voluntary, but encouraged. I paid for it, because it saved me a lot or work compared to other options I had at the time (Serviio transcoded video files on the fly, organized files, the IMDB connections worked well, recognized most popular smart TVs and BR players, etc.).
