Software volume and bit perfect output

Postby MarmiteSandwich » 06 May 2016, 10:04

I understand that when you use software to control the volume, you will not get bit perfect output, since the stream is being digitally processed to achieve this. But if you set the volume level to 100%, does this not tell the volume control routine to make no changes? This would mean you can "switch on" bit perfect output, for those times when it matters, just by putting the volume level to max?

Sometimes I want volume control from my UPnP control point, when the sound quality isn't critical, and sometimes I just want to listen to the best, and it is a bit clunky to have to load up the Rune Audio web page, go into the settings and change the volume control method to achieve this.

Bit perfect is a very difficult thing to achieve with multiple layers of software, and/or most hardware.

Unfortunately RuneAudio is not the only layer of software that touches the audio stream, so just because the player app does not alter the data, it does not mean the actual playback is bit perfect.

You would have to disable volume control in Rune Audio, just for starts, not just set it to 100%.
