Software volume control not working

Postby john3354 » 31 Oct 2016, 18:35

Yesterday I set up a RuneAudio install on a Pi3 with a C-Media USB sound card and the volume control in the RuneAudio interface is grayed out and disabled. Are there any post setup tasks necessary to enable volume control functionality, or is this something that only works with other sound card options?

I have currently only tried the Spotify functionality, so it was when playing back that.

The settings you requested are:

Volume Control = enabled-software
Start volume = 50
Volume knob = realtime

Oh. Will it work with hardware volume control, or there is no volume control in Spotify at all?

Never mind. After no reply I looked and saw that this software has not been updated for over two years. No bugs have been fixed for 3 months and before that it was over a year. Code repos have been dead for quite a while.

That's a shame. It looked promising at first glance. Off to look for something else. This open source project appears to be effectively dead.

Synology DS214+ -> RP3 -> Hifiberry Digi+ -> Audio-Gd NOS1704 (coax) -> Audio-GD C-2 preamp/headphone amp ->

1) Yamaha M-4 Power Amp -> Energy Pro 22 Speakers OR 2) HiFiMan HE-400i

Audio Nirvana!!!

I get that this is an open source project worked on by volunteers, but 2 years since a release? Honestly, if I had paid any attention when I was on the download page and saw that, I likely never would have even tried it at all. That is a very long time in the software world. I say this as a person who owns two software businesses. You don't have to do nightly builds, but at least put out something every few months even if it just doing bugfixes.

Yes, I installed Volumio. It has volume control in Spotify, so I am happy. But, one place that RuneAudio excels at in comparison is the smartphone app side of things. You guys did a really nice job on that part of it, and the wife really liked it, which really helps. Wife Acceptance Factor is always an important criteria.

If you ever get the new release out, I might give it a shot. I have a few extra Pis sitting around. But the point stands, if I had noticed that your most recent release was from 2014, I never would have tried it in the first place. Two years is an eternity in software and not having any volume control in Spotify is just not adequate. I would have even accepted it if it were only supported on a hardware basis with a HAT.

I say all of this not to insult your project, or to start some sort of flamewar. I only intend to give honest feedback to help you improve your project. I sincerely wish you all the best, and if things improve from my stance, I may be back.
