Kernel panic - 0.3b and USB3 HDDs

Postby challenge » 17 Nov 2014, 11:06

UPDATES on post #3

Sometimes I can't turn it off. I click power off in the runeUI and it hangs as the image shows, without turning off.
I don't know if it's corruption on card, but I reflashed it a million times, and after a few days and all the initial settings this reappears.

Raspberry B+ and IQaudio pidac+.
I'm using a usb 2.5 hdd, safe mode gpio=4 and max usb current=1.
All running on a 2.1 amp wall adapter, good usb cable tested up to 2amp.
Power usage should be well under the 2 amps.
I don't have this problem on volumio or other music "distro", so I'm not sure it's related to power supply.

This on 0.3beta. Don't know what's causing it.
Also it's headless setup, so when this shows I can't ssh anymore to take logs...
And there aren't logs on sd card after.

FWIW I solved this by using a newer kernel.

It turns out that the 0.3beta kernel doesn't like the usb-sata interface i'm using.
No problems on 3.18.x kernel.

so can't wait for 0.4 with newer kernel, I hope it will have the 3.18 with new device tree support.

Re: Sometimes I can't power it off (screen attached) USB3

Ok I found more info that could be useful to others too.

Lots of USB3 external HDDs could have this problem.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=183190&p=2

It seems that it has been solved somewhere in 3.17.x kernel.

I can confirm that as soon I installed kernel 3.18 I had no more kernel panic.

Hi challenge, thank you for the tip, it's helpful for anybody having the same problem. In the 0.4 there will be a 3.18.x kernel available and switchable from the UI.
