Strange update behaviour of locally attached HD

Postby Trollpferd » 16 Aug 2016, 20:35

Dear all,

I am still a very happy user of a Raspberry Pi 2 with RuneAudio and recently updated from 0.3 to 0.4 beta.
Now, with regards to the attached hard drive, a problem appeared. I guess this might have to do with the update … ;-(
I always had and still have a 2 TB hard disk directly attached to my Raspberry.
Content-wise, from time to time, I am updating the hard disk with the newest mp3’s via my Windows 10 PC, over the network.

And now for the strange things:
Unlike earlier times, when I now syncronise the hard disk that is attached to my Raspberry over the network, the sync tool ends with error messages (or even stops working).
I then tried several things manually via Windows Explorer and found out that, when I copy music files onto the hard drive, I do partially get error messages, saying that there is not enough space available.
Needless to say that there is still plenty of space available on my hard drive … ;-)
Also, local access to the hard drive (via Windows Explorer or sync tool) still works as it always has.

Some observations:
- I was not able to copy into some folders on the network drive, whereas for the most of the folders, everything works fine
- For these problem cases I created new folders instead and tried to copy the mp3 files into them instead. This partially worked, but only when I only copied a smaller amount of files (e.g. only 20 instead of 50 mp3 files).
- When I then tried to get rid (and delete) the old “problem folders” it seemed to work, however, after some time, the folders appeared again.
- Just to better identify these folders I then renamed all of them to “Zombie”. Now, a day later, the zombie folders seems to have disappeared …

Any idea for this behaviour and what I could do to avoid it?
Manuall sync of my 400 GB music library is not an option.
Could it have to do with the automatic updates of the library that Runeaudio is processing?

Ideas and hints welcome. The only workaround I do see, is to work with a network drive instead of the current locally attached hard drive.
Thanks, Trollpferd

Hi Trollpferd,

what size is your sd card?

I first would try to the filesystem.
Your usb hdd is mounted into the filesystem and windows only checks the free space on that.

Hi Frank,
thanks for the fast feedback. Haven't changed the size of the partition, so far. The SD Card size is 8 GB. How many space does RuneAudio and/or the MPD Server e.g. need for e.g. 72.000 files, 400 GB of music? Do you think the usual 2 GB image is too small then? I am right that I need to install PuTTY then?

Kind regards, Trollpferd

Hi Frank,
not sure whether I have understood the resize/expand thing correctly: I have a 16 GB SD in use. Which of the two partitions should be enhanced at the end? The 1,7 GB one, or the 100 MB partition? I referred to the posts "Increase size of partition to use unallocated space!" and "Extend a partition" descrption at the Troubleshooting but wasn't sure as I think the explanations differ at the end. What I then did at the end was to enhance the 1,7 GB partition.
I think that a part of my problems disappeared - the error messages that there is not enough free disk space when I copy files onto the HD via Windows.
However, I still have the problem, that I can't really delete some of the folders on the HD. As I have written, the HD is attached via USB and I access the HD over my Wifi network via Windows/File Explorer. When I delete a folder, it seems to disappear in the view, but after a while, moving back to the same area on the HD, the folders are still existing ... These folders where this error occurs, btw, seem to be a bit special: When I try to copy a file into them, I get an error message of the Windows File Explorer, saying "error 0x8007045D" and "Input/Output device error". When I then rename the "problem folder" and create a new folder with the old name and copy the same file into this folder, it works.
All in all, this is of course annoying because it means that I can't sync my MP3's with a sync tool in a reliable manner.

Any idea? Kind regards, Trollpferd

Hi Trollpferd,

are these files downloaded with something like BitTorrent?
