support for justboom digihat

Postby soundof-ferns » 03 Mar 2017, 19:53

I'm new here, apologies if this question has been asked, but a search did not find it....

I'm running release version: 0.4 (build: beta-20160313) on pi 2 (just downloaded the build yesterday). I have tested using USB output to a bryston BDA-1 DAC, with good (excellent) results. However, given pi USB issues (and BDA limits of USB 1.1 and16 bit over USB), I wanted a tos or spdif interface. I had a justboom digi hat board for the pi 2, which has both tos and coax spdif outputs. But the board doesn't sync with the DAC (which reclocks and normally syncs with almost anything), and looking at the rune pi2 troubleshooting, the file /boot/config.txt does not appear to have an entry for the digi hat. Should I conclude there is no support for digi hat with rune? digi hat (justboom) claims compatibility on their website.

as a second question, is there a better (well, proven) solution for rune/pi spdif output to external DACs? The Bryston reclocking is very good, and probably making up for some USB limitations, but I'd sure like to hear this setup with a better pi/DAC digital interface....

Hi soundof-ferns ,

the Justboom products need a recent kernel.
Please try image it has support for the Justboom Digi built-in. You can select the DAC on the settings page no need to edit config.txt.

Re: support for justboom digihat - Solved

solved! the new image did it. a great thank you for the pointer (and for the developers who worked the I2S support....)

the sound from rune using I2S and the digi hat reclocking, toslink to my bryston DAC (then through a parasound preamp, dual mark levinson monoblocks, and martin logan full range electrostats) -- is a religious experience when playing remastered or well mastered flac.

the one oddness I noted: every other device I've connected to the bryston maintains sync. the digi hat board only syncs when the output is active. it was a bit disconcerting, but does not seem to impact playback. I have heard no glitches at all in my first hour of listening...
