USB to Ethernet adapter - how to get it working

Postby tboooe » 11 May 2016, 01:16

Hi guys. I want to try out a Cable Matters USB to Ethernet adapter on my Pi3. I believe this is based on AX88179. Anyone know how to get this working? I think I have edit a line in somewhere? I found a link that says I have to add a line to /etc/network/interfaces but I cant find this file on my Pi3. Problem is I dont know what I need to add or edit even if I found it.

BTW, the reason I want to try this for a couple of reasons:

1. I want to compare the sound quality using the built in Ethernet port (which I have read is noisy), built in wifi, USB wifi, and USB to Ethernet adapter

2. I want to see if using the USB to Ethernet adapter will give me faster speeds than the built in 10/100 port.

Ok Ive been reading a bit and I think I have to create an eth1 file in the directory /etc/netctl

The contents of the eth0 file are:
Description = 'eth0 connection'
Interface = eth0
ForceConnect = yes
SkipNoCarrier = yes
Connection = ethernet
IP = dhcp

Any ideas?

The contents of the file will have to read eth1, not eth0. There are other example files in /etc/netctl/examples that you can use, and on various Arch Linux web sites/forums. Does RuneAudio recognise the adapter when you plug it in and reboot?

I am not sure I understand what the goal is, but you can definitely find examples for how to do it...

I sometimes use this when problem solving network issues. No need to install, just run it.

Advanced IP Scanner 2.4.2601
Key Features of Advanced IP Scanner:
Scan your entire network in just a few seconds
Detailed reporting about each device including Manufacturer, MAC address, user, name, and IP
Connect to computers remotely, shut them down, or remove them from the network all within Advanced IP Scanner's interface
Completely free to download, install, and use!

Figured it out! There was an IP address conflict. For some reason the Pi3 kept trying to get the address 192.168.2.116 which was being used by another device on my network. I know I can set a static IP address but why does the Pi3 keep trying that one address? Even after rebooting it kept trying that one.
