Utterly stupid noob question about SD card

Postby naomieve » 11 Oct 2015, 01:43

Hi all, this is the embarrassing first question that I will always feel dumb asking, but desperately need help with!

I have my very first ever Raspberry Pi (2). I've downloaded the correct Runeaudio img file (I unzipped the gz file and have the img file ready). I've bought a Raspberry Pi branded SD card. I've wiped it using SD Formatter. I've restored the img using USB Image Tool. I've put the SD card in the Pi. I've connected the Pi via ethernet, and a decent power source. I plug it in. The LED lights are on, but not flashing. The LAN lights are not on at all. http://runeaudio does not load.

I've tried this about 3 times. I'm obviously missing something stupid/obvious. I would love absolutely any help at all. Thank you in advance.

Two possible issues:

A) Incorrect image used. For Raspberry 2 you should use the download link for "Raspberry Pi 2(model B)", i.e. the downloaded file should be named "RuneAudio_rpi2_0.3-beta_20150304_2GB.img.gz"

B) Incorrectly "burned" image. Which program are you using to write the image to SD card? Win32DiskImager works best (if you are using WIndows, that is), IMHO...

Use the correct image (write it to SD card properly using Win32DiskImager - http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/), and it should work OK - on the Raspberry Pi that it is intended for...

Thanks for the advice - I confirmed I had the right file, and tried Win32DiskImager, but to no avail.
Now I have an even stupider question. Do the speakers have to be plugged in to the Raspberry Pi in order for boot-up to work?

How "decent" is your power source? The recommendation is that it should deliver 2 amps, so I use a genuine BlackBerry micro-USB charger which can deliver this high current. Not all power sources are created equal. You can purchase this type of charger relatively inexpensively on eBay and it comes with British, US, European and Aussie/NZ adaptors.

I would also suggest trying a different sd card, and no you don't need speakers connected for Rune to boot.

If you have a decent router, I also suggest assigning a fixed IP to your Pi, then use http://"Your IP" instead of http://runeaudio. The network is a bitch, sometimes.
Have you tried :
- connecting to it via SSH from another computer (using Putty from Windows for exemple) ?
- connecting it to a TV/Screen/Whatever via HDMI to see if it boots correctly ?
