I am just a beginner too. I have two RPi3 up and running one on Ethernet using it as a player into a USB DAC. The other a wifi unit with HIFIberry DAC PRO. It took me a while to get them running and I wasted a lot of time with MoOde and Volumio. Rune seems to be the most stable and robust.
Personally I would start small just with the PI, nothing else. Start with a freshly made SDchip. Get it on the network. Use a laptop or computer to access the Rune interface.
The PI will mount your USB drive automatically and play music through the audio out jack on the PI you select on the interface. This will build your confidence and you will learn the interface.
If all is well then you will need to edit the "config.txt" file on the SD chip and remove the hash tag (#) in front of your HIFIberry device. CHOOSE THE RIGHT ONE.. Attach the HIFIberry device and boot up.
You will be able to select your DAC in the config pages.
once all this is working then I would tackle the touch screen.
One of the biggest problems with MoOde and Volumio is that the SDchip was easily corrupted. I got in the habit to stopping the music and shutting down the Pi via the interface. This insures that all that the chip is not being wriiten to when you shut it off and will lessen the chance of corrupting the SDchip
This is a great system, takes a little while to get it going and the price is right.

Yes, using the internal P3 wifi, but...

I've never had it connected to any network actually- I don't plan on using it with wifi, just my USB drive. It was working great on just the touchscreen before I pulled things apart and fitted it into the SmartPi case. I'm wondering if I zapped one of the boards or something. I've checked all the cables, etc.

After some experimenting, it seems that strange behavior is limited to when the output is set to Digi. I don't have a 1/8" male to male cable to test output from the Pi board, but the controls all function perfectly while playing music with Analog or HDMI outputs selected. I don't get any of the hangups or freezes. Could this be caused by a bad Digi board?

Here is journalctl:
runeredis.log:
runeui.log:
runeui_access.log:
ui_error.log:

The other logs had very little information in them.

I forgot to mention- the Pi does playback with sound when using the Pi's built-in 1/8" jack.
